Iniative: College Preparation
While we feel expanding debate alone improves a student's opportunities for continuing their
education, the Jersey Urban Debate League is commited to finding new and unique ways to
further improve our debaters' collegiate experience.
College Bridge Tournament
In the fall of 2004, the JUDL decided to combine what our kids do all year and what we strive
for them to do in the near future: continuing their education. The College Bridge Tournament
was born that fall and has become a JUDL tradition.
JUDL and Science High School Debate alumni reached out to their alma maters, local colleges
and universities. That network continues today to provide the debate community a competitive
debate tournament with 2 college fair sessions. The following colleges have participated event and have voiced their commitment to our annual event.
| Marist | SUNY | Kean University | Clark University | George Washington University |
| Yale | Wellesley | Rutgers University | Seton Hall University | Columbia University |
| Swarthmore | NJIT | Franklin Pierce | University of Vermont | The College of New Jersey |
| Drew | Pace | Montclair St University | Virginia St University | Clark-Atlanta University |
| Oberlin | Penn State | University of Virginia | Princeton University |
SAT Preparation
The JUDL has a rich history of SAT programs. Take a look at what we have tried and what we are trying today.
- Book Club: There is no better way to improve vocabulary skills other than reading. Our
book club has an on-line discussion of the subject book complete with contests and prizes.
- SAT Lunch Sessions: Every debate tournament has lunch, but JUDL tournaments are working lunches. Each
debate team works together to complete a SAT section. Trophies are given to the high point team.
- Word of the week contests: Selecting debate resolution related words and/or phrases, this on-line contest
had students submitting their definitions and use of the word/phrase in a paragraph. The best write-up was awarded
with movie tickets.
- SAT Workshop: A weekly workshop concentating on both math and language skills
Senior Night
Once a year the JUDL coaches, staff, alumni and seniors get together for a night of college application
collaboration. Every senior leaves that night with a filled application complete with transcript, cover letter and personal statement.
FedEx envelopes also make their way to Senior Night.
