Science Parks Hosts HUGE Middle Grades Tournament

By Margarita MoralesShare/Bookmark

December 19, 2010 - The Jersey Urban Debate League held its second middle school tournament of the season at Science Park High School on Dec. 18th. It was larger than the last one with 125 teams competing (99 in the beginner division and 26 in the experienced division) from 21 schools. This proves the league's growth and is a testament to how important the activity is.

This tournament was different for two reasons besides the larger turnout. First, the tournament was held at 12:30pm instead of the usual 10am to accomdate high school admisisons testing. Secondly, Bronx Law, a school from NYC attended with 11 teams. Additionally, the JUDL staff held a holiday party for the coaches.

Taking first place in the beginner division was Jaynell Lewis and RonNae Smallwood from MLK with Amit Kukreja and Camara Wooten from University following a close second. In the experienced division Joshua Azcona and Nyasia Sanchez from First Avenue School placed first team with Angel Marte & Jonathan Avilla of Bronx Law following in second. Congratulations to all the debaters!

The next tournament on Jan. 22 will be held at Techology High School and Westside High School to accomdate the large participation. The last time the league held a tournament at two sites was during the Newark Invitational this past January.
