January 21, 2010 - This past weekend the Jersey Urban Debate League sent eight policy team and five Lincoln-Douglass debaters to the winter Lexington Invitational Tournament in Massachusetts. The LD debaters competed Jan. 15 and 16, while the policy debaters debated on the 16th and 17th. Teams competed in six preliminary rounds and if they qualified then went into elimination rounds. Out of 100 debaters Carlos Astacio from University High School received 18th Place Speaker and Muta Mashack from Newark Science received 24th Place Speaker. Carlos Astacio, Elijah Smith, and Mutt Mashack had a 4-2 record and were amongst the top 32 debaters, breaking into double octos. In policy, Kylah Broughton and Devane Murphy from Newark Science also had a 4-2 record and broke to double octos. Thirty-five school competed in the LD tournament.
